OSI Group has managed to remain relevant in the American food industry for over a century. The company, which was started in the early 1900s has grown by leaps and bound to become among the top privately owned food processing and distributing companies in the U.S. But how did OSI Group manage to remain at the top of the game for more than hundred years?

Background check

The history of OSI Group dates to as far as 1909 when a German immigrant known as Otto Kolschowsky opened a small butcher shop in Oak Park. At this time, Otto Kolschowsky had stayed in the U.S for only two years. The company, known by the name Otto & Sons LTD focused on supplying fresh meat to the local market. With time, the business grew and Kolschowsky decided to relocate his shop to the nearby Maywood in Chicago. In the new market, Otto & Sons established a reputation by supplying customers with high-quality products and fresh cut meat.
In 1955, Otto & Sons were contracted by the McDonalds to supply fresh meat to their restaurants in Chicago and other states in the U.S. This was a great breakthrough for the company since it enabled them to increase their processing capacity and also revenues.

Appetite for expansion

Otto Kolschowsky was a revered businessman and a visionary leader. Through his entrepreneurial skills, Otto grew his business from a small butcher shop to large processing facility supplying fresh meat to the renowned McDonald restaurants. Since its inception, OSI industries focused more on growth and conquering new markets.

In 1975, the company rebranded from Otto & Sons LTD to OSI Industries. As a result, they needed more capital to increase processing capacity and penetrate new markets. The sons of Otto who were the executives in the company approached Sheldon Lavin to seek his consultancy services. Sheldon Lavin had a financial consultancy firm that helped companies in accessing funds from lenders.
